It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Monsignor Jonas Abib, SDB, founder and leader of the Canção Nova Community. Monsignor Abib was born on December 21, 1936 in Brazil and dedicated his life to serving the Catholic Church and the Brazilian people.
Monsignor Abib was known for his charismatic leadership and his commitment to spreading the message of the Gospel through his work with the Canção Nova Community. Founded in 1978, Canção Nova (which means "New Song" in Portuguese) is a Catholic Charismatic Renewal movement that seeks to evangelize and support Catholics through various media, including television, radio, and the internet.
Under Monsignor Abib's leadership, Canção Nova grew to become a significant force in Brazilian Catholicism, with millions of followers around the world. In addition to his work with Canção Nova, Monsignor Abib was also a respected author and speaker, known for his deep faith and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life.
While the cause of Monsignor Abib's death has not yet been announced, it is clear that his passing is a great loss to the Catholic Church and to Brazil. His contributions to the Church and to the Brazilian people will not be forgotten, and he will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Monsignor Abib is survived by his family and by the countless people whose lives he touched through his ministry and his work with Canção Nova. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this difficult time. May he rest in peace.
