An original Sesame Street cast member and actor named Bob McGrath passed away on Sunday. He was 90.

Cat McGrath, his daughter, confirmed to News that McGrath passed away as a result of stroke complications.

Family members used social media to share the actor's passing: "He died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family," read one post on McGrath's Facebook page.

In the Sesame Street pilot from 1969, McGrath—one of the show's original human cast members—played the amiable neighbor character Bob Johnson alongside Big Bird and a number of other adored Muppets. McGrath was a show regular for nearly five decades.

The Sesame Workshop wrote on Twitter that Bob "embodied the melodies of Sesame Street like no one else, and his performances brought joy and wonder to generations of kids around the world, whether teaching them the ABCs, the people in their neighborhood, or the simple joy of feeling music in their hearts."

McGrath, who was raised in Ottawa, Illinois, first attended the University of Michigan and then the Manhattan School of Music to study music. By the time Sesame Street hired him, McGrath had gained experience as a performer. The tenor singer was hired by NBC in 1962 to perform on Mitch Miller's family-friendly ensemble TV program, Sing Along With Mitch. McGrath continued to perform with the group after the show was canceled two years later, holding down a residency at Desert Inn in Las Vegas. According to the biography page on his website, he took his talents on tour in Japan, where he amassed a passionate teenage fanbase.
