Cricket Whanganui announced his death on Facebook on Sunday 20th November 2022, saying, "It is with heavy hearts that we note the passing of Whanganui Cricket Association President, Garry Spooner (Spoons) on Friday 18 November 2022." Garry was a die-hard fan of any sport he could get his hands on, as evidenced by his ten years as Chairman of Sport Whanganui and work as a code of conduct commissioner for New Zealand Cricket. Throughout his playing career, he participated in numerous seasons of club and representative cricket. Spoons worked as a lawyer for Treadwell Gordon. He had been working there since 1970, when he was admitted to the bar for the first time.

He spent the majority of his career there. Garry began his legal career in 1970, after receiving an honors degree in law from Victoria University, by joining Treadwell Gordon. Garry had previously earned his law degree from Victoria University. Garry spent his childhood and adolescence in Whanganui.
